Investigation into Caamano death

The Attorney General, Francisco Dominguez Brito, has announced that the circumstances surrounding the death of Colonel Francisco Alberto Caamano Deno should not remain secret and said that his office is prepared to open an investigation to ensure that whoever was responsible for the supposed execution is brought to justice if it can be proved that he was murdered.

Caamano’s relatives reacted positively to the announcement, saying that they wanted to know the truth and that Dominguez Brito was a man of morals who respected the law.

The death of Colonel Caamano, which took place in the hills in Nizaito, above San Jose de Ocoa on 16 February 1973, has been surrounded by rumors and different versions of what happened even to this day. The army, and Joaquin Balaguer’s government told the country that Caamano had died whilst fighting against army troops who were hunting both him and a group of guerrillas.

However, another well-worn version is that Caamano was captured alive and injured and that six hours later he was executed, and his body disappeared to save his grave becoming a place for homage. According to the press, and different witnesses, more than 15 soldiers who took part in the fight against the insurgents have corroborated this version. In fact barely a week ago a General from the Air Force, Juan Pou Castro, who was a Major at the time said that he was there when Caamano was captured and that he spoke to him before he was executed.
