Theft of Claro cables getting worse

Telecoms company Claro is complaining that its cables are still being stolen throughout the country, and in fact it is getting worse and resulting in a loss of service to its customers.

The company says that the problem is due to organized gangs that have changed their method of operation, which now includes violence, as in a recent case when an employee of Claro’s Security Department was killed when he came across people cutting Claro cable in Los Prados de San Luis, Santo Domingo East.

Claro said that they were concerned about the theft levels, 838 cases in the last few months, even though they were increasing security measures to try and combat the crimes. They have spent more than RD$82 million in a year to replace stolen cable, plus the damage it causes to businesses that are left without communication.

The cables are apparently being stolen as they contain copper, which is not available naturally in the country.
