According to Presidency Media Director Roberto Rodriguez Marchena, President Danilo Medina makes his surprise visits to communities and hospitals to gain information from people who can express themselves freely so that he can make the best decisions. He said that even he is unaware of when the visits are taking place.
President Medina confirmed this during a breakfast with journalists and photographers at the National Palace saying that when he decides to make a surprise visit to an area only one person knows and when he arrives everyone there is surprised as they don’t know he is coming either.
Present at the breakfast, on the top table, as well as Rodriguez Marchena and the President, were representatives from the media who have been accredited by the government for the longest time, including Francia Valdez from El Nuevo Diario, Viviano de Leon from Listin Diario, Wellington Carpio from Noticias SIN, Ambiorix Rosario, from Telemicro and Maria de los Angeles from Color Vision.
The journalists expressed their disappointment at not knowing when the surprise visits would be made and President Medina assured them he was telling the truth when he said no one knew, and they didn’t need to know everything. He simply wanted to protect the freedom of the Dominican people to tell him the truth to help him with his decision-making.
Marchena went on to say that since he became President, Medina has restructured the Presidency Information, Press and Publicity Department and the Government Information Center to form DICOM with a unique and different structure that has facilitated direct and two-way communication with Dominican society.
He announced that from January all press briefings in the Orlando Martinez room at the National Palace as well as the weekly press meetings would be transmitted in real time via Twitter.
In addition, all of the photos could be found on the Presidency web page and could be downloaded in high quality and the videos could be downloaded in high definition.
