Medina and Garcia promise closer ties for DR and Puerto Rico

Shortly before his formal inaugural ceremony, the new Governor of Puerto Rico, Alejandro Garcia Padilla took time to meet briefly with President Danilo Medina who traveled to Puerto Rico yesterday, Wednesday 2 January.

Medina confirmed that now “was the moment” for the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico to come together and deepen their relationship, not only of friendship ties but also for business relations. He said that Garcia Padilla had used his own campaign words that it was the time to do “what had never been done” in improving DR and PR relations.

Medina had met Garcia Padilla when he traveled to Puerto Rico during last year’s Presidential election campaign.

Medina said that the DR was in debt to Puerto Rico that is home to hundreds of thousands of Dominican immigrants. He said that he hoped that both countries could make unprecedented progress in bilateral relations.

Following the inauguration he returned to the Dominican Republic landing at around 4pm at the La Isabela International Airport in the Province of Santo Domingo.

Puerto Rico is the third top trading partner and fourth export market for Dominican produce. The DR primarily exports steel rods, piping, bottles, plastic goods, wooden furniture and agro-industrial and farm products. It imports petroleum and byproducts, vehicles, and food products from Puerto Rico.
