Today is the Day of the Judicial Branch

The Supreme Court of Justice will celebrate the Day of the Judicial Branch today, Monday 7 January. For the first time President Danilo Medina will head up the formal event that includes a speech by the Chief Justice of the high court, Mariano German Mejia. The judge, who also chairs the Judicial Branch Council will review the behavior of this branch of the government during 2012, and of the first year of the new membership headed by the SCJ, appointed on 22 December 2011. He is also expected to outline new directions to be followed in terms of monitoring, training, strengthening and vigilance of judicial employees.

The activities will begin at 9am with the laying of a wreath at the Altar of the Homeland. Forty-five minutes later there will be a Te Deum Mass at the Church of Our Lady of Peace in the Centro de los Heroes. Then they will hold the formal hearing in the SCJ High Courtroom at 11:45am, with President Medina in attendance. The judges from the Constitutional Court, the Higher Electoral Court, the Central Electoral Board (JCE) as well as civil and military officials and many personalities have been invited to the act.
