Army prevents hundreds of Haitians from entering RD

Army units together with local police and members of the Specialized Corps for Frontier Security have blocked hundreds of Haitians, led by Father Regino Martinez, from returning to the Dominican Republic in Dajabon. Hundreds of these workers are gathered in Juana Mendez (Ouanaminthe), Haiti, and are trying to return to their jobs in the DR. According to El Caribe, the authorities had agreed with Father Martinez, who heads the Frontier Solidarity group that the Haitians could return to their country for the Christmas holidays and return to the DR if they had their IDs from their employers as well as an official ID document from Haiti. Spokesmen for the Armed Forces and the National Police said that apparently many just went home with neither of the required documents and now they want to return. The stand-off threatens to halt today’s Market Day in Dajabon, an event in which millions of pesos are at play.
