German calls on magistrates to be fair

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Justice and chairman of the Judicial Branch Council, Mariano German Mejia, warned that in the hands of reckless judges given to detours, the law of guarantees becomes a danger for society. In his keynote speech yesterday, Monday 7 January during the solemn session in celebration of the Day of the Judicial Branch, attended by President Danilo Medina, the judge declared that the interests of society were above those of individuals. He stated his belief that the aim of the law is to protect society, not to leave it exposed to danger. “Judges guarantee the rights of defendants, apply the Constitution and the law, but do not leave society unprotected with foolhardy acts, because rash and reckless acts become unfair acts against society and, as such, they also deserve punishment,” he said.

He suggested that justice was a special service, because the training of the judicial employees and the recognition of their rights to carry out a job in dignified conditions are obligatory, unavoidable and irreplaceable. He made it clear that they need many judicial workers, “but more than many judicial workers, good judicial workers, which includes judges, public defenders, lawyers’ assistants, teachers, office workers and so forth.” The judge said that only the judges who understood their strength and recognized that their training takes them to the achievement of this possibility every day, should remain in the Judicial System.
