Young people not interested in politics

Hoy reports that Javier Cabrera, the executive director of Participaci?n Ciudadana, attributes young people’s lack of interest in politics to the ?inability of the political parties to provide solutions to the main national issues?. This statement was given at a meeting yesterday between young representatives of the principal political parties. Cabrera stressed the need for a new vision, including the eradication of the political patronage typical in the Dominican system. He estimated that 80% of all Dominicans have little interest in politics, because of the failure of successive governments to make inroads into tackling social problems and poverty. Indotel Director Orlando Jorge Mera, representing the PRD’s youth wing, called for young people of all parties to become more involved in politics to bring about these changes.
