Whale watching season opens

The Ministry of the Environment and other public and private institutions have announced that the humpback whale watching season is now open, and presented a memorandum of understanding on the subject to the city hall in Samana.

The Environment Ministry says it will invest part of the money collected during the whale watching season in improving the Marine Mammals Sanctuary located in the Silver Bank area off the north coast so that thousands of people could enjoy one of the world’s most spectacular natural events, when hundreds of humpback whales return to the Bay of Samana and the Silver Bank area to give birth and mate every year.

Whale watching season boosts the economy when more than 30,000 tourists and Dominicans make the excursions, as reported in El Dia.
