National District to get major facelift

Areas located between the Malecon to the south, JFK Avenue to the north, Abraham Lincoln Avenue to the east and Winston Churchill to the west are due for major renovations. The Ministry of Public Works says the pilot project would then be extended to other areas of Greater Santo Domingo. The work includes improvements to street paving, sidewalks, lighting, drainage and signage.

Minister of Public Works Gonzalo Castillo says that they will be working closely with power distribution company Edesur, and that works should be completed by June 2013.

The Ministry of Public Works is also implementing the construction of 4.25 km of the Maritime Boulevard, a Santo Domingo city government project.

The area includes many of the city’s main shopping centers.

He confirmed that the Ministry is installing drainage, lighting, and a 5.5 meter sidewalk along the Malecon. Fishing areas will be installed for the enjoyment of citizens.

Castillo also announced that rainwater drainage at Jose Amado Soler and Charles Summer streets in Santo Domingo would be improved.
