Haitian consulate in Santiago closes

After dozens of Haitians denounced the operation of a ring that used forged identities to benefit criminals, the government of Haiti ordered the suspension of operations of the Haiti Consulate in Santiago, as reported in Diario Libre. Haitian protestors demanded the replacement of the consul or minister counselor in Santiago, Ralph Hippolyte for failing to take the necessary measures to prevent the sale of identities. As reported in Diario Libre, the president of the Association of Haitian Students in the Dominican Republic, Ashley Fils said that the measures were benefiting criminals who had escaped from Haitian jails. The protestors are calling on President Michel Martelly to open an investigation into the case and establish responsibilities. The consul general of Haiti, who has served in the post for two months, was not available for comment to the press.
