Yesterday, Wednesday 30 January, President Danilo Medina inaugurated the 150-meter long Caiman Bridge on the road from Enriquillo to Pedernales in the southwest. The coastal bridge and road had collapsed after Hurricane Georges in 1998. Previous government attempts to repair the highway had not been successful.
Medina ordered the work to be completed and built to withstand hurricanes a few days after taking office last year. The Minister of Public Works, Gonzalo Castillo is from the southwest.
Castillo made the main speech, saying that thanks to the bridge, the provinces of Barahona and Pedernales were once again efficiently linked. He stressed the importance of the bridge for economic and tourist development in the area. The bridge was repaired in time for the inauguration of the second phase of the Los Cocos Wind Farm.
The Governor of Barahona province, Pedro Pena Rubio also spoke at the event to thank President Medina for prioritizing the bridge that benefits the two southwestern provinces, Barahona and Pedernales.
The Senator for Pedernales, Dionis Sanchez, praised the speed with which Public Works had completed the construction of the bridge that is located in Las Cuatro Bocas in Enriquillo, after 14 years in a state of disrepair.
