No more building in protected areas

The Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources has agreed to the voluntary evacuation of the first 23 families living in houses built illegally on the shores of Laguna Gri-Gri in Rio San Juan municipality in the north east, marking the start of a campaign to stop building in protected areas throughout the country.

Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez made the announcement during a visit to San Pedro de Macoris, and he warned that the authorities would take strong action against anyone building houses in these protected areas.

He said that in the case of Laguna de Gri-Gri, they had come to an amicable agreement with the residents who are being evacuated.
