Colonel Jacobo Moquete, spokesman for the Metropolitan Transport Authority (Amet) says that they have ticketed 3,721 car drivers and motorcycle riders in January this year for breaking Law 241 in the National District and Santo Domingo province.
He said that the violations included crossing a red light, driving without a license, and going the wrong way up a one-way street. In addition there was drunk driving and driving without a seat belt.
He said that dozens of motorcycles have been taken to the Police Department of Investigation for Stolen Vehicles as they were found to have chassis alterations and false papers. Some of them were large bikes that had entered the country illegally without paying the appropriate tax and they had been sent to the Customs Department in order for their owners to pay the tax that is owed and obtain the correct documentation.
Last week Amet enrolled another 300 people in order to increase the number of agents, and they have also increased the eligibility requirements, which now include a high school leaving certificate. They will be trained in interpersonal skills and conflict management.
