First Lady’s Office to help fight cancer

First Lady Candida Montilla has announced that her office will support the fight against breast and uterine cancer in women. Announcing the Well Women (Mujeres Saludables) program yesterday, Thursday 7 February, she said that statistics showed that these two types of cancer are the second and third causes of women’s mortality in the country. “The First Lady’s Office cannot be indifferent to the suffering of so many families,” she said, while introducing the program at the Presidential Palace.

She said the program would focus on preventing cancer and early detection, but when necessary, it will also fund surgery, especially for women diagnosed within the framework of the program.

Fourteen public hospitals will implement the program nationwide, under the supervision of the Ministry of Public Health. The objective is to significantly reduce the incidence of cancer in the country.

Also present for the announcement were Presidency Minister Gustavo Montalvo, Public Health Minister Freddy Hidalgo and Senate Vice President Cristina Lizardo, as well as directors of public hospitals.
