First Lady visits young mother

The First Lady, Candida Montilla, has visited an 11-year old rape victim who is in the Intensive Care Unit at the Plaza de la Salud hospital in Santo Domingo after giving birth.

Montilla also spoke to the girl’s parents, saying that she and the First Lady’s Office wished to help the family, proving psychological support if necessary.

She also spoke with the president of the Board of Trustees of the hospital, Julio Amado Castanos Guzman and the medical director, Nepomuceno Mejia, who said that the patient was stable, conscious and cooperative, and was now getting out of bed and eating.

The child’s parents said the girl, the youngest of six, was a good child who studied hard, and that when she was raped and subsequently became pregnant she was in fifth grade at the Las Palmas school.

The child appeared to be pleased to see the First Lady, saying that she wanted to become a doctor when she grew up.

Montilla gave the family milk, diapers and other products for the baby who is being looked after by its grandparents and great grandparents.

The girl was raped last year, apparently by her brother in law, 28-year old Geudy Jose Martinez, who is now in Najayo jail. Her family discovered the situation when she was four months pregnant. She had hidden the pregnancy as he had threatened to kill her if she told them about the rape.
