Presidential legal advisor Cesar Pina Toribio says that President Danilo Medina will announce the details of the government decision to move on tourism development in Bahia de las Aguilas. As reported in Diario Libre, Pina Toribio declined to discuss Decree 713-13 that grants him special powers to sign agreements with holders of property titles the government is now recognizing in the unspoiled beach area. Eminent journalist Huchi Lora examined the issue on his TV and radio talk shows yesterday, Tuesday 12 February and said that the decree is irregular because it recognizes as valid what were once proved to be fraudulent titles. While Bahia de las Aguilas is state property, a former director of the governmental Agrarian Institute (IAD) arranged for title distribution, negotiating a farming settlement on lands where no farming is possible. The titles were later sold to others whose lawyers have argued that they bought the property in good faith. Huchi Lora says that President Danilo Medina must be misinformed. He said if this goes through it would be “the country’s greatest ever theft.”
