Dozens of men and women of Haitian descent will take part in a religious procession today, Wednesday 13 February, asking to be recognized as Dominicans. The march will leave from Isabel Aguiar Avenue, at the corner of 27 Febrero Avenue, and end outside the main Central Electoral Board (JCE) building.
Group representative Elena Lorac said that the JCE has been applying resolution 12-07 since 2007, which denies them access to their civil documents and prevents them from getting decent jobs, registering their children and studying.
She said that the JCE would also not let them have copies of their birth certificates, without giving them proper reasons.
The movement, called “Reconoci.do” is made up of young Christians who said the march is being timed to coincide with the beginning of Lent.
