According to the administrators of the cemeteries in Bani, all three cemeteries are now full and there is no space for any more bodies.
There is only room in family crypts or for people who have already purchased their plot.
According to Ramon Aguasvivas, a gravedigger for 50 years in the area, the famous “Cementerio Viejo”, built in 1835, was full over 50 years ago, and the cemetery at kilometer 2, in Escondido, which was built in 1963, was also full 22 years ago. The most recent cemetery was built in 1994 in the northern part of the city, and that too has been full for two years, according to Ramon Benito Calderon, the administrator for the past 15 years.
Local government officials say they are trying to resolve the problem by looking to increase the size of the cemeteries.
Local neighborhood groups have also complained about the state of the Cementerio Viejo, where the founders of the town and dozens of heroes from the War of Independence and the Restoration are buried. They say that the cemetery stinks of fecal matter and urine, and has become a meeting point for homeless people and criminals.
