A fire occurred at 4pm yesterday, Tuesday, 12 February on the beach at El Cortecito in Bavaro, which affected the Hotel Carabela, El Pulpo Cojo restaurant and the Dos Acuaticos business, with losses running into millions.
It appears that the fire started when a gas tank exploded, apparently in the restaurant’s employees’ home. The restaurant, made of wood and palm leaves, was then burned to the ground and around 10 rooms were affected in the hotel.
Staff and customers were evacuated by the Navy, Bavaro Fire Brigade, Civil Defense and the Tourist Police and no deaths or injuries have been reported.
A spokesman for the Higuey Fire Brigade said that the strong wind had contributed to the spread of the fire, although there are also reports that the fire brigade arrived without water.
