The Ministry of Education says that teachers will receive wage increases that will add up to more than 100% over a two-year period. Public school teachers want to double their wages now that the Medina government has doubled the pre-university national budget assignments.
The Ministry says that a 15% general wage increase for public school teachers is included in the 2013 National Budget. However, the Dominican Association of Teachers, which represents public school teachers, wants a 100% increase now. As reported in Listin Diario, the ADP is demanding wage increases of 100% of base salary, or RD$8,972.63.
The Ministry says that additional merit-based increases of 30% are planned for 2014. Increases of 20% on base salary are also planned for 2014-2016 as additional incentives for teachers completing certification programs. A 15% wage increase is also set for 2015. The Ministry says that teachers who qualify for the different stages of increases would be getting a 106% wage in 2015 compared to 2013.
The Ministry of Education says that by 2016, 85% of public teachers will be working in extended school days, and making RD$57,150 a month. Teachers working half a shift will be making RD$32,659 a month.
The Ministry says that proposals made by the Medina government seek to improve the quality of education, while improving living conditions for teachers.
