Civil society advocacy group Participacion Ciudadana has issued a highly critical statement in response to the deal for tourism development in Pedernales announced by the Medina administration, and its implications for the Bahia de las Aguilas beach area. The statement says the decision makes the President “complicit in a long chain of legal and constitutional violations.” It deplores the way that the government is justifying the decision on the grounds that justice is slow, adding that it will only encourage others to follow suit. The group says that the minutes from the case reveal that the delays in the case were caused by the state prosecutors themselves.
“It is clearly demonstrated that the government sought to keep this case behind doors and the public only became aware when 7dias.com.do revealed the existence of the power of attorney signed by President Medina. As of today the identities of the beneficiaries of the fraud have not been revealed,” says the statement.
Participacion Ciudadana concludes that Medina’s decision is “simply unacceptable because it is illegal and immoral and will only contribute to consolidating the Dominican Republic in the bottom rank that it occupies in international surveys on corruption, generating deep deception and leading to a loss of all hopes for a change in this regard in the performance of the new government.”
The civic group says that it backs the development of the south, but that the proposed solution is not the only way of solving the impasse. It reports that knowledgeable jurists have identified other legal solutions that are more advantageous for the country.
