87% of Haitian workers are illegal

A new study reveals that 87% of Haitians working in the country do so without legal status. The research paper, Status and Contributions of Haitian Labor to the Dominican Economy, was produced by the Centro de Formacion y Accion Social y Agraria (CEFASA) directed by economist Agustin Gonzalez.

The study says that the only sector that has made efforts to regularize the contracting of Haitian labor is the banana industry, where 40% of the Haitian laborers are legal. The reasons behind this are labor requirements of the European Union, the main buyer of banana exports.

The study also showed that 69% of the Haitian laborers are temporary workers, while only 31% has permanent work contracts. In the banana industry, 85% of the workers employed have permanent contracts.

The study showed that in the construction industry, 88% of Haitian laborers are temporary workers. The researchers say that the investigation showed that almost all Haitian workers live in the DR but go from temporary to temporary job.
