President Danilo Medina granted a RD$17 million line of credit to the avocado producers who are members of the Cambita Farmer’s Multi-Service Cooperative, in Cambita, Garabito in San Cristobal province. He made the announcement during an unscheduled visit to the small community during one of his weekend trips, yesterday Sunday 24 February.
He said that he would instruct the director of the Special Fund for Farming Development (FEDA), Antonio Lopez, to hold a meeting with the directors of the San Cristobal Avocado Cluster on Friday, 1 March and come to an agreement on another RD$15 million requested by the entity and the packing company. Medina made it clear that the RD$17 million credit is not a gift, but that it would be granted at a “very low” rate of interest and with a grace period that would allow the producers to develop their plantations and increase their production. The President said that his trips all over the country are aimed at providing assistance to the country’s neediest citizens.
