Najayo to become Model Penitentiary

The Attorney General of the Republic has transferred the jail at Najayo, with a population of 3,500 inmates, to the new penitentiary model, where the inmates receive food and clothing and are controlled under the order of new direction. Inmates are being transferred to other jails in order to prepare Najayo for the new model. Ysmael Paniagua, the coordinator of the New Model for Prison Management, put Adolfo de Jesus Serrata in possession of the management of the new Najayo-Men facility.

He said that the transformation of Najayo is an unprecedented event, in benefit of those who are imprisoned in this penitentiary, for whom the system, as well as guaranteeing their rights as citizens, also provides an opportunity for rehabilitation for their subsequent reintegration into social and working life. “Today (yesterday, Monday 25 February) we have taken control of the prison at Najayo, with the single objective of starting its transformation, until we convert it into a correctional and rehabilitation center, a process that we will carry out slowly and gradually, as we did with what is today CCR-Rafey-Men, in Santiago.”
