Yesterday’s press coverage of the horrible accident on the Puerto Plata-Navarrete highway was somewhat hurried, since the accident occurred late Sunday night, 24 February and all the information was not readily available to reporters. The accident, caused by a head-on collision between a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck and a Daihatsu truck loaded with worshippers returning from a prayer meeting, took place near the refuse dump, was terrible. The truck went off the road and turned over. According to today’s Hoy, Tuesday 26 February, the latest information puts the death toll at 10, and the number of injured at 25. The highway, which is being resurfaced along long stretches, is mostly unmarked and completely unlit, putting nighttime road users at risk.
