What is the environment impact of the Barrick mine?

The environmental impact of Barrick Gold has not been measured, says Omar Ramirez, executive vice president of the National Council for Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism. As reported in Hoy, he said that the Council would intervene if Medina authorizes an audit of the company’s carbon emissions. He said that the carbon footprint of Falcondo Xstrata Nickel in Bonao is 2.5% and the six cement plants operating have a general carbon dioxide emission of 9%, he said.

Ramirez said that the country has not determined the environmental impact of the gold mining operations in Pueblo Viejo, as this has not yet been measured, he said during the Fifth Meeting of the Table of Cooperation on Climate Change held in Santo Domingo yesterday, Thursday 28 February. Issues of vulnerability, climate change, regional cooperation and other topics were also discussed at the meeting.
