A new program will soon be implemented to help foreigners living in the Dominican Republic to regularize their status. The requirements will depend on how many years the foreigner has been living in the country, director of Immigration Jose Ricardo Taveras told Diario Libre. He said the new plan would give grandparents and parents the status of legal citizens and they will be allowed to register so they no longer appear as in transit. He said that the foreigners would be given a limited time period to regularize their status. Taveras said that this would be a legal way to resolve the status of thousands. It would work around the Constitution of 1966, the interpretation that the Supreme Court of Justice did to the meaning of being in transit, it resolves the human problem and validates the situation of these in the civil registry. Some 19,000 persons employed by 200 companies would benefit. The workers would then be incorporated in to the Social Security system.
