All work has stopped in the Town Hall in San Cristobal and the building is padlocked shut. The employees are threatening to continuing stopping traffic from San Cristobal to Santo Domingo and the southwest of the country, as they did early yesterday morning, Tuesday 12 March when they blocked the entrances and exits to the city with garbage trucks.
The protesters claim that the Ministry of Interior and Police and the Treasury have still not sent the money to pay their wages for February.
The situation has arisen because the local council’s bank accounts have been frozen due to an outstanding debt of more than RD$70 million.
