Vice President says comments misinterpreted

Vice President Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez says that her comments about the commission that represented the country at the investiture of Pope Francis were misinterpreted.

Cedeno de Fernandez said that she was proud that the First Lady, Candida Montilla de Medina, was representing the Dominican government.

She said that the whole situation had been poorly interpreted, and the truth was that when she was responding to people on the Twitter social network she had no idea that there was a Decree or that there would be a Decree, because as far as she was concerned it was always going to be President Medina and his wife who were going to the ceremony.

She said that she was proud that the First Lady was representing the country and that it was perfectly acceptable for her to represent the State and the government in the name of the President and the Vice President.

The situation began when Cedeno de Fernandez tweeted that she thought that the First Lady should not be at the ceremony for the new Pope because it was only for Presidents and Vice Presidents. However, President Danilo Medina issued a Decree, number 80-13, to say that the Dominican delegation would be led by the First Lady, Candida Montilla de Medina and also included the Administrative Minister of the Presidency, Jose Ramon Peralta, the Dominican Ambassador at the Holy See, Victor Grimaldi, and Deputy Foreign Relations Minister Jose Manuel Trullols.

News commentators mentioned that the First Lady had volunteered with the late Father Emiliano Tardiff, and reported that when she greeted Pope Francis he recalled that she was “from the land of father Emiliano Tardiff.” The First Lady invited the new Pope to visit the Dominican Republic.
