Solar power for Saona

The Ministry of the Environment has formally begun work to set up a mini-generating system for clean energy in Mano Juan on Saona Island. The generator, financed by the government of Taiwan, will supply electricity to more than 100 families.

The project will cost around RD$12 million and will also include a First Aid center, a school, an information center and a control center.

Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez said that a mini solar power electricity generator would replace the existing fossil fuel generators as part of an agreement between the governments of Taiwan and the Dominican Republic to implement solar power systems in several areas across the country.

At present, Saona Island, with a population of around 300 people, only has electricity for three hours a night, provided by two generators.
