Bankers sent to La Romana jail as privileges are cut

Bankers Andres Aybar (Banco Mercantil) and Pedro Castillo (Banco del Progreso) were transferred to the La Romana model jail yesterday, Thursday 21 March while their cells at the Najayo Jail are renovated. El Dia reports that white-collar inmate Edwin Baquero Alvarez, in jail for title fraud, was also sent to the La Romana jail.

The men’s section of Najayo Jail in San Cristobal is being remodeled to convert the area to the structure used in Dominican model jails. This means they have to have haircuts, no air-conditioning in cells, the same uniforms for everyone and no internal circulation of money, among other privileges the bankers will now be losing. This is in stark contrast to the area where prisoners who could not afford privileges were kept.

Prosecutor General Francisco Dominguez Brito said that the transfers would be made gradually as renovations progress at Najayo. The renovations at Najayo should be ready by July with a capacity for 2,000 men. Each cell will now have two bunks and a bed.

Dominguez Brito also announced the construction of a high security jail in Palave, Santo Domingo West with a capacity for 250 inmates. He also said that a new jail for minors would be built in the area where the Ciudad del Nino is located.
