The local authorities in Santiago announced plans to set up 12 giant swimming pools in the area known as Paseo del Yaque during Easter Week, but this was rejected by the Santiago Aqueduct and Sewer Corporation (CORAASAN).
The director of CORAASAN, Silvio Duran, warned the mayor of Santiago, Gilberto Serulle that he will not allow him to use drinking water to fill the temporary pools, saying that it was inappropriate to use water for that purpose as there was a drought. He pointed out that the water level in the dam that supplies Santiago was four meters below its minimum level and that the water situation was critical.
However the mayor has said that if he cannot connect to the drinking water supply, he would use water from the fire engines to fill the pools
He said that the idea was to help poorer people who could not get to the beach and the pools would give them the opportunity to enjoy Easter Week without leaving the city.
