The Duquesa Landfill began to receive refuse yesterday, Monday 8 April as part of its new 24-hour work schedule, as was announced by the Lajun Corporation last week. Max Da Silva from Lajun said yesterday: “We have the structure ready to receive the garbage that is brought in by trucks. We invite anyone who wants to come and visit,” he said.
Oscar Garcia Arias, National District (ADN) city government director of Urban Cleaning and Equipment told Diario Libre that they would hold a meeting with the companies that are under contract to pick up refuse and garbage in order to apply pilot plans for the use of the 24 hours that Duquesa is open. Garcia Arias stated that the city was not ready for this, despite the announcement by the company that manages the landfill at Duquesa. He said that they have not received “any formal communication reporting the availability of such a schedule.”
Da Silva reacted by saying that “the request for opening for 24 hours was made by the mayor, and we found out through Diario Libre; there was never any formal request.” Lajun Corporation decision to open the landfill 24/7 comes in response to a statement by Mayor Roberto Salcedo during a session of Dialogo Libre on 25 February. As a reaction to these statements, Da Silva announced that they would start opening the landfill for 24 hours in April.
