Joseph (Sepp) Blatter, the president of the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) is in the Dominican Republic as part of a six-day Caribbean region tour that began on Sunday, 14 April with a visit to Haiti.
Upon his arrival in Santo Domingo on Monday, 15 April, he was met by Dominican Football Federation president Osiris Guzman. Blatter is accompanied by FIFA’s general secretary Jerome Valcke and CONCACAF president Jeffy Webb.
Blatter is looking into “Football development” in the region. After his stopover in the DR, he will visit Cuba and Panama. Blatter says the four countries are “excellent examples in the CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Football Associations) region of how football can contribute to social development. Blatter has highlighted the support provided to football in Haiti.
In Haiti, FIFA contributed a greater part to the US$4 million special project that included the installation of artificial turf and lighting systems at the Sylvio Cator Stadium in Port-au-Prince. FIFA has also approved other initiatives worth over US$2 million to support the sport in Haiti.
