A 30-hour electricity blackout in Bonao, Monsenor Nouel province provoked street protests by community activists yesterday, Tuesday 23 April. Business owners complained that their sales have suffered, especially nighttime food and drink vendors who could not charge their backup inverters, and others who do not have fuel for their generators.
During the protest, 32-year old Jose Luis Cruz Estevez was shot in the foot.
As well as outrage at the blackouts, protestors expressed their opposition to the proposed mining in Loma Miranda, and called for the cancelation of the Barrick Gold contract and an end to femicides.
