More arrests on illegal boat journeys

Members of Naval intelligence have arrested 78 Haitians, 48 of who were on an illegal boat (yola) bound for Puerto Rico, which departed from Boca de Yuma, Higuey. The two Dominican boat captains were also arrested.

The other 30 Haitians were arrested in Miches as they were boarding another yola.

According to initial reports, each had paid US$1,500 to the Dominican and Haitian trip organizers.

The Haitians will be taken to Santo Domingo, handed over to the Migration department and repatriated to Haiti and the two Dominicans will be handed over to the M2 Intelligence Department and brought to justice.

Nearly 300 illegal travelers have been arrested in the first three months of this year.
