Civil unrest increasing

According to the Civil Society Union at the Dominican Political Observatory (OPD-FUNGLODE), an entity founded by former President Leonel Fernandez, during the last month, April 2013, there were 93 protests around the country, which is the highest number recorded so far this year, with the National District and Santiago taking the top places.

There were demonstrations in most of the country’s provinces apart from Elias Pina, Espaillat (Moca), Hermanas Mirabal (Salcedo), La Altagracia (Higuey), La Romana and Peravia (Bani).

Between January and March, there were two protests a day on average, but this rose to three in April.

During his Presidency, former President Leonel Fernandez advocated political patronage to keep demonstrations to a minimum.
