Former Minister of Tourism Frank Jorge Elias was arrested for domestic violence yesterday, Thursday 9 May. He is accused of beating his wife Sandra Kurdas, a US citizen and former beauty queen. They have been married for 32 years and have four children. As reported in El Nacional, Kurdas had been living in the US and returned for the legal procedures against Jorge Elias. Jorge Elias is the owner of SuperCanal 33, a local TV station. He has denied the charges through his lawyer Ramon Pina Acevedo. Prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso said that Jorge would be prosecuted in line with the policy of gender violence crimes. The prosecutor said that Kurdas returned from the US on Sunday, 5 May for questioning to prove accusations of gender violence and serious psychological violence by her husband over several decades. The last incidence of physical violence occurred on 11 June 2012, as reported in El Nacional. The case made waves last month when Kurdas used the social networks to circulate a photo of herself showing alleged evidence of violence.
Frank Jorge was arrested yesterday evening after answering questions in the Gender Violence Unit of the Prosecutor Office of the National District. He then spent the night at the Justice Palace jail in Ciudad Nueva.
