It seems that internal party strife is common to all three main parties, to the extent that rivals are prepared to go to the most extreme measures. Four people – all of them PLD militants – are under arrest for the attempted murder of PLD deputy Manuel D?az. The four men burst into the PLD offices in Congress, where they attempted to fire at D?az. The plot was thwarted, however, when the would-be assassins were overpowered by security staff and subsequently turned over to police. D?az announced that this was not the first time someone had tried to kill him, claiming that his assailants were contracted by his main rival from his hometown of Villa Altagracia, and who D?az defeated in the congressional elections.
