Celebration turns into tragedy

Five people died yesterday, Sunday 12 May and several were injured when the pickup truck in which they were traveling blew a tire and flipped over on the Yapur Dumit Avenue, near the Barranquita Sports Complex, in the southern part of Santiago. According to Civil Defense personnel in the province, the number of dead could increase because several of the injured suffered very serious trauma. According to Diario Libre and Listin Diario, the victims are Marianelis Santana, Luis Rosario, a couple, Geteri Montan and Elvis Santana, and a young person known as Chayanne. The victims were travelling in the back of a white Toyota driven by Arismendi Santana who lost control of the vehicle. Some accounts said that there were as many as 20 passengers on the pickup truck. The victims and several of the injured were taken to the Jose Maria Cabral y Baez Regional University Hospital and other to clinics in the city. The victims lived in the Yaguita de Pastor barrio of Santiago and were coming back from the softball field at La Barranquita where they were celebrating their team’s win.
