US backs police training program

The Police and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have launched a new program “Strategy in the Context of Change” that aims to train 56 senior police officers in criminal investigation techniques. The training will be provided by the International Program for Training in Criminal Investigation (Icitap), from the United States Justice Department, and funded by USAID as part of a joint initiative by the US and Dominican governments to strengthen and improve the professionalism of the DR Police and turn it into a modern force.

The aim is to help the Police to develop a long-term strategic plan and to implement efficient responses to support the government in its aim to improve public safety and police efficiency.

During the program launch, USAID deputy director Jim Wright applauded the efforts of the Dominican authorities to improve the members of the Dominican Police and Major General Jose Armando Polanco Gomez, chief of the National Police, thanked the US government for its support, saying that the Dominican people have wanted a trustworthy, transparent and efficient police force for a long time and that this program was an important step towards achieving that.
