The Department of Taxes (DGII) has begun the registration of two million motorcycles of all sizes that roam the streets and highways of the Dominican Republic. The tax agency is requiring a symbolic payment of RD$100 for the registration, but the agency will be backed by a RD$400 million grant from the government to implement this plan. Guarocuya Feliz, director general of the office, told reporters that the DGII has opened four more offices to provide the registration services to the public. He said that motorcycle dealers have to pay this sum to the DGII since they have charged this tax in the vehicle sale price. Motorcyclists are known to be the cause of most traffic accidents in the Dominican Republic.
