Next week’s Easter holiday operative involves the mobilization of 100,000 emergency services and volunteers, who will work on accident prevention programs across the country. Defensa Civil, the national voluntary organization, is in charge of the initiative, along with the National Emergencies Committee (CNE), local authorities and some NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations). The operative consists of an anti drink-driving campaign and the installation of 2,000 first aid posts along the country’s main highways and in popular tourist areas, mainly near the beaches. Some beaches and inland bathing spots considered dangerous have been closed down, and the use of jet skis will be banned in most areas. Other measures include restrictions on the movements of heavy goods vehicles and what authorities describe as a “drastic” clampdown on drivers who do not use their seatbelts, drive dangerously or are found to be drunk at the wheel. The cost of the Semana Santa operative is estimated at RD$37 million.
