Big win for Dominican woman boxer

Dominican middleweight boxer Yenebier Guillen defeated Team USA diva in a bout for the finals in the Women’s Boxing Continental Championship held on Sunday 19 May in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela. She won the gold defeating Crews 15-7 points in the continental event in which 15 countries competed. Listin Diario reports that it is the second time that Guillen has defeated Crews. The previous occasion was during the Pan Am Games held in Guadalajara, Mexico in 2011. To reach the finals, Guillen defeated also three-time world champion Canadian Spencer, to whom she had lost in the 2011 Pan American Games.

Team USA nevertheless won the overall championship, by winning eight of 10 gold medals. The Dominican Republic received Guillen’s gold medal, and another went to Venezuela. The president of the Dominican Boxing Federation, Bienvenido Solano says that the win now places Guillen among the best women boxers in the world. Solano is also president of the Continental Boxing Confederation.
