President Danilo Medina has confirmed he will attend the 4-6 June Organization of American States assembly in Antigua, Guatemala. President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia and Laura Chinchilla of Costa Rica have also confirmed their presence at the event. Ministers of Public Relations from 34 of the 35 OAS countries, with the exception of Cuba, have confirmed their attendance to the 43rd General Assembly.
The Presidents will hear findings of the report by specialists on the Drug Problem in the Americas that was released on Friday, 17 May as the region looks at a new approach to drugs.
The report sets out a future in which more countries in the Western Hemisphere could legalize marijuana and analyzes alternatives to the war on drugs. The report recommends reallocating resources from controlling drugs to preventing and treating problematic use and the shrinkage of criminal markets and profits through regulation.
This is the first time that regional leaders will suggest alternative approaches, decriminalization and legalization.
