France and the Dominican Republic have agreed to cooperate to divide up responsibilities in the case of a businessman who was said tried to flee using a Dominican diplomatic passport.
The case involves a French-Lebanese businessman Ziad Takieddine, who is linked to a case involving corruption in France but who holds a Dominican diplomatic passport, which he allegedly obtained for US$200,000. He was detained by French police last week when he tried to leave France with his Dominican passport, which, according to his lawyer, he holds because he wanted to invest in the country.
The French ambassador in the DR, Blandine Kreiss, says that she is sure that other nations will also cooperate as President Danilo Medina has asked for the case to be cleared up.
Diplomatic passports in the Dominican Republic are issued by the Ministry of Foreign Relations. The Ministry has said that the passport facsimile shows the document is not legitimate because it uses an ID number of the series available for minors.
