The DGII, the Department of Taxes (DGII), has issued the General Regulations for the application of the new version of the Tax on Vehicular Circulation (ICV-Marbete 2013). This is the sticker that must appear on the windshield of every motor vehicle in order to use the roads. These guidelines will allow vehicle owners to comply with the requirements, according to Hoy newspaper, of Law 253-12 on Tax Reform.
As General Regulation 03-2013 says, the new tax will be equal to 1% of the value of the vehicle and the DGII has a book that lists the value of each vehicle. If a vehicle is worth RD$500,000, it will have to pay RD$5,000 in order to obtain its ‘marbete.’
The DGII has helped owners work out what they will have to pay. On their website (www.dgii.gob.do) they have a tab on the left hand side that says ‘Servicios’ and then ‘Vehiculos de motor’. Click on this and then find your vehicle on the pop-up menus provided. This is not for the faint of heart. A 2005 VW will now pay nearly double what it paid last year.
