Five were killed and over twenty were injured when a loaded sugarcane truck struck a bus on the Coral Highway between Higuey and La Romana on Saturday 22 June. Of the 22 injured, according to El Nuevo Diario, some 17 have been treated and released. Four patients are still in a serious condition in the Dr. Virgilio Cedano Clinic in Higuey and another person is being treated in a clinic in La Romana.
Just hours later, on the road between Higuey and Yuma, five people were injured in an accident between and SUV and an automobile, and were sent to the came clinic in Higuey. Newspapers reported also that three young men lost their lives in Neiba, on the other side of the country, near Barahona, as they raced their motorcycles.
