Miguel Vargas’ term technically expires today

The press is following the PRD as the internal conflict comes to a turning point as the term for which party president Miguel Vargas was elected on 27 September 2009 expires today, Friday 19 July. News report say that Vargas has convened the National Executive Committee of the party to meet on 28 February 2014 for election of the new authorities, intending to continue on as president of the party through the period.

Hoy reports that dissident party faction members, under the leadership of former President Hipolito Mejia met yesterday, Thursday 18 July to decide on their next steps. Vargas has expelled members of Hipolito Mejia’s faction from the party.

Mejia defeated Miguel Vargas to become the presidential candidate for the party in the 2012 election and since then the party has been divided.
